She holds a BA in African-American Studies from Brown University and an MFA in Acting from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. Then, she made an appearance on BET's epic show The Book of Negroes. She began her career as an actress in 1995 as Ariel in The Tempest. Her stage credits comprise Come and Gone Drowning Crow as well as Seeking the Genesis, a Broadway production of Joe Turner. The most recognizable part of her career is her roles in the films Men of Honor as well as the Caveman's Valentine The Express & The Help.
